This project
is near Yampa, Colorado. The project is
designed to provide a shallow water
component to the area. Maximum depth is
three feet with an average depth of a IDot or
less, The primary use will be by migrating
water birds, with nesting expected to be a
minor benefit.

The FWS's Arapaho National Wildlife Refuge
administers the Partners for Wildlife Program in North
and Middle Parks. These mountain parks are large
inter-mountain valleys at high elevation (7000-8000
feet M.S.L.). These areas are extremely important to
wildlife and have high populations of nesting
waterfowl. Ranching and logging are the primary uses
of private land. Pressure to develop ranch land is
ongoing in Middle Park and just beginning in North
Park. Therefore, most projects are on working
ranches and need to fit into the agricultural production
requirements. Because of this, the number of projects
in North and Middle Park is not high. However as
trust between the landowners and Refuge staff
increases more project opportunities will become
available. Seven Wildlife Extension Agreements were signed in North and Middle Park to
improve or create 18 acres of wetland.

Figure 11: Newly constructed wetland
project in North Park

7
