STATE OF COLORAOO
Roy Romer, Governor
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES

DIVISION OF WilDLIFE
AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER

John W. I

DearMr~th: ~

Occasionally an opportunity comes along that is so uniqu~: and with so many possibilities that one
is instantly aware of its magnitude anll potential. The Wetlands Initiative Legacy Project I am
forwarding to you is that kind of opportunity for Colorado, the Division of Wildlife and Great
Outdoors Colorado. It is an excellent example of a major ]~r~ject that fi)cuses on our mutual goals
and priorities. This is an opportunity, unlike any seen for a long time, for our organizations to
work together for the benefit of the people of Colorado and for the benefit of a very important
wildlife habitat type and its associated, wildlife.

How appropriate it is that the Wetlands Initiative, an innovative and uniique approach to wetlands
conservation, has come about on the L OOth anniversary of our agency. I have described our
100-year-old agency as a new DivisiOIl ofWildllfe preparing for and poiised for the next century,
the next millennium. The Wetlands htitiative is a definitive: example of our commitment to make
the necessary changes and create the innovative strategies that a new division will require.

The Wetlands Initiative will allow all of us concerned with the loss of habitat to focus on the
conservation of a very valuable wildliH: habitat - wetlands. The many p:artners, all with great track
records in the wetlands conservation, the multitude of funding possibilities, the enthusiasm
throughout the state, and the synergy resulting from this cooperative effort, all point to an
outstanding success.

cc: Great Outdoors Colorado Board
Colorado Wildlife COmmiSsiOEI

DEPARTMENT OF NATUFIAL RESOURCES, James S, Lochhead, Ex"cutive Director
WILDLIFE COMMISSION, Arnold Salazar, Chair.
