FLOOD INSURANCE STUDY

1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Purpose of Study

This Flood Insurance Study has been prepared to revise and update
a previous Flood Insurance Rate Map for the Town of Rangely, Rio
Blanco County, Colorado. This information will be used by Rangely
to update existing flood plain regulations as part of the regular
program of flood insurance by the Federal Emergency Management
Agency (FEMA). The information will also be used by local and
regional planners to further promote sound land use and flood plain
development.

In some states or communities, flood plain management criteria or
regulations may exist that are more restrictive or comprehensive
than the minimum Federal requirements. In such cases, the more
restrictive criteria take precedence and the State (or other juris-
dictional agency) will be able to explain them.

1.2 Authority and Acknowledgments

The sources of authority for this Flood Insurance Study are the
National Flood Insurance Act of 1968 and the Flood Disaster Protec-
tion Act of 1973.

The hydrologic and hydraulic analyses for this study were performed
by Simons, Li & Associates, Inc., for FEMA, under Contract No.
EMW-C-0942. This study was completed in December 1983.

1.3 Coordination

Streams requiring detailed study were identified at an initial
meeting attended by representatives of the study contractor, FEMA,
and the Town of Rangely in June 1982.

Results of the hydrologic analyses were coordinated with the U.S.
Army Corps of Engineers (COE) , Colorado Water Conservation Board
(CWCB) , Claycomb Engineers, and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

In January 1984 the results of the study were reviewed at an inter-
mediate coordination meeting attended by representatives of the
study contractor, FEMA, and the Town of Rangely. No significant
changes were made as the result of that meeting.

"~'-.
