I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

PBEFleE

At the request of Urban Drainage and Flood Control District, Douglas County, Arapahoe County,
Town of Parker, City of Aurora, and City of Centennial, this report 'was prepared by URS
Corporation of Denver, Colorado under the April 2, 2002 Agreement regarding "Major
Drainageway Planning and Flood Hazard Area Delineation for Cherry Creek Corridor Upstream of
Reservoir. "

1bis report describes the flood characteristics of Cherry Creek from approximately the south end of
Cherry Creek Reservoir Recreation Area (Cherry Creek Park) located about I mile north of
Arapahoe Road (7 miles downstream from Parker, Colorado) to Scott Road located approximately 7
miles upstream from the Parker town limits.

1bis report was prepared for the guidance oflocal officials in planning the use and regulation of the
floodplain. Several potential floods were used to represent degrees of major flooding that may occur
in the future. Two of these floods, the 1 %-probability (IOO-year) and the O.2%-probability (500-
year) floods, are defined in the Glossary and should be given appropriate consideration in planning
for safety of development in the floodplain. The two potential floods are further defined by flooded
area maps that show the approximate areas that would be inundated. Flood profiles show the water
depths relative to the streambed and flood elevations across the width of the valley. Cross sections
are presented to indicate ground level across the valley and the overlying flood depths. The flood
profiles and flooded area data presented were based on the existing conditions of the watershed,
stream, and valley when the report was prepared, or with developments in the floodplain that have
been approved and are under-construction. Possible future improvements to control floods are not a
consideration of this report. 1bis report was also based on the assumption that the Cherry Creek
Corridor hydrology under future conditions will be closely matched to hydrology under existing
conditions.

The information in this report does not imply any Federal interest or authority to zone or regulate use
of the floodplain; this is a local responsibility. The report provides a suitable basis for the adoption
ofIand use controls to guide floodplain development with consideration for environmental attributes,
thereby preventing intensification of loss problems. Because the report identifies flood problems, it
will stimulate the development of other flood damage reduction techniques such as flood control,
removal of obstruction, and flood proofing; these techniques might be used in an overall floodplain
management program (FPM).

The cooperation of local officials and public and private interests in providing assistance and
information was most helpful. Assistance from the following agencies is especially appreciated:
Urban Drainage and Flood Control District, Town of Parker, City of Aurora, City of Centennial,
Arapahoe County, Douglas County, Colorado State Parks, Colorado Water Quality Control Division,
and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Distribution of the report to officials, agencies, and individuals concerned with planning in the area
covered will be made by Douglas County, Arapahoe County, Town of Parker, and the Urban
Drainage and Flood Control District.

~\\1I11111111111111
$"~S)O REGI'//~
~ ~~'ft. .......
