The flood

plai varies in width from about 300 - 600 feet in the steeper areas, to

over 2000 feet in the flatter areas.

FLOOD HISTORY

occu

thun

Storms which produce floodwater occur during May through September.

Duri g this period, warm, moist air masses from the Gulf of Mexico

comb ne with cold and comparatively dry air from the polar regions to

caus thunderstorms. The storms are usually characterized by high

rain all intensities of short duration, producing high peak flows and

te volumes of water. Frequently, the thunderstorms are seVere and

over rather limited areas. Floods are especially severe if the

rstorms follow a period of high snowmelt or prolonged rainy weather.

due
Majo
stru
the

istorical documentation of flood damage is meager. This is probably

'the small size of the streams and the lack of extensive urbanization.

flood damages'in the watershed are to roads, bridges, irrigation

ures and agricultural land. Duration of flooding is brief due to

,
eep slopes and small size of drainage area. In general, peak

last from I to 4 hours during a flooding period of from 6 to 24

hour

- 6 -
