Cascade Lake Dam Site, RMNP, 8,450', turnoff on left at top of terminal <br />moraine, 4:10 pm. <br />This was the second dam to fail after the 1982 Lawn Lake dam failure. <br />Inflow peak discharge was 7,200 cfs and outflow peak discharge was <br />16,100 cfs. Also discuss the effect of Horseshoe Park, located just <br />upstream from Cascade Lake, on the 1982 flood peak attenuation. <br /> <br />17. Horseshoe Falls and Roaring River, RMNP, 8,600', 4:30 pm <br />The peak discharge at Lawn Lake Dam (4.5 miles upstream from here) <br />was about 18,000 cfs; here at the alluvial fan the estimated peak <br />discharge was 12,000 cfs. Although the flood was caused by a dam <br />failure, flood features probably are the same resulting from as a natural <br />flood. Discuss the 1982 flood and the preservation potential for deposits <br />,of such large floods.. What changes might b~ expected in watershed <br />response following wildfire or controlled (prescribed) burns on water and <br />sediment runoff? Length of time for watershed recovery? What is <br />recovery? What issues need to be considered following wildfires for <br />water and sediment runoff? As they relate to erosion, deposition, process <br />rates, and landscape evolution? <br /> <br />18.*** (Inaccessible in winter) -- Endovalley Picnic Area, RMNP, 8,700' <br />Chiquita Creek is typical of streams above 7,500 feet that show little <br />or no flood evidence.
