32 APPENDIX B MISSISSIPPI HEADWATERS RECREATION SURVEY Hello, my name is . I am from Bemidji State University and we are conducting a study for the Mississippi Headwaters Board on the recreational use of the Mississi~pi River. Would you be willing to help us out by taking a 11ttle of your time to answer some ~estions? (If person asks how long it takes or seems undec1ded say: "It has been taking people between 5 & 15 minutes depending on how much they have to say." If refusal check __ & complete observations section.) We are studying the recreational use of the Mississippi Headwaters which is the first 400 miles of the Mississippi River, from Lake Itasca to the southern border of Morrison County near st. Cloud. The ~eople who manage the Mississippi Headwaters are seeking informat10n from river users so that they can better serve the public. In a separate study, we will be collecting information from people who own property along the first 400 miles of the river. 1. Do you own property on the Headwaters portion of the river? YES NO (IF yes: "Later this year we will be mailing surveys to a sample of property owners, so your name may be randomly selected to participate in that study. But for. now, being you are using the river we would appreciate it if ~ou could fill out this survey on your use of the r1ver and return it at your earliest convenience in the postage-paid envelope provided." (Thank respondent and terminate interview.) I am going to ask you a series of questions that pertain only to this trip to use the river. At certain points in the interview I will ask you to make general comments that relate to your visits to use the river at other times during the year.
