SECTION VI

school amI the football fieldjtrack. The flow cuntinue, in a channel in a southerly
direction to West Avenue where it turn, and flo....'S westerly to a crossing of B Street.
At this point, the channel again turns to a ,outherly Jirection with crossings of
Golden Avenue and Eaton Avenue. At a point north of Carr Avenue, the channel
turn.'; ill a southwesterly direction with crossings of Teller County One and Bennell
Avenue. After crossing Bennett Avenue, the channel flows in a westerly dircction
to an intersection with a tributary channel which follows Teller County One from
west to cast. At this intersection. the channel then flows in a southerly direction
through the undeveloped southwest portion of the city anJ out of me corporate
limits.

ORAI;'\o'AGE STRUCTURE J~PROVEMENTS

This section presents a discussion of specific drainage structure conditions and offers
recommended solutions to correct inadequacies. Preliminary cost estimates have been
prepared based on the recommended solutions and are presentcd in Section VII uf tlJis
master plan. The location and alignment of the proposed improvements is shown
schematically on Exhibit No.2, "Drainage Structures; and Exhibit No.3, "Bennett Avenue
Storm Sewer System." Results of a field inventory of existing drainage structures is included
in Appendix C of this report. Details of existing drainage structures are summarized in
Table 5 in Appendix B, " Existing Drainage Structure Evaluation." Table No.5 provides
information on structure size. material, availableheadwater, ent rancecondition, capacity,
required capacity and adequacy. Tahlc 6 in Appendil; B, "Recommended Drainage
StruClllrc Improvements' provides a summary of all drainage infrastrueture improvements
recommenJcd by this master plan.

Master planning is a dynamic process anJ is not intended to, 'ca,t recommended
improvements in stone," but rather provide guidelines unJer which future impruvements
shuuld be made. Variations in proposeJ lanJ use and development may occur which will
require revisions or modifications to me proposals contained herein. The recommenJed
improvements to storm water drainage facilities contained in this report shoulJ he reviewed
anJ their required hydraulic capacities. grades, sizcs and alignments should he verified
during the preliminary design phase for each individual improvemcmprojecl.

The existing channels are typically in an undeveloped condition, ar e unstable and of
inudequatesize to convey runoff from the tOO-year designstonn. El;istingculverts
at the various street crossings are severely undersized anJ in mun yinstancesinvery
poor condition. Inadditiontostructuresalongthemainchannel,numeroussmaller
culverts exist whieh convey flow from smaller subbasins within the watershed to the
main channel of Pony Gulch. In mo,t instances. these culverts are of adequate size.
but in some ca<;es in need of repair or cleaning.

Storm wmer rUlloff from the Pony Gukh watersh"..! Clllers the dty's ~,)[p()ratc limits
through a clearly defined channel north of the Cripple Crt'ekjVictor School. The
flow ..:ontinues southcrly crossing Galena Avenue and follows a channel hetween the

Design storm runoff in Pony Gulch for the 1O.year design ~torm varies from 167 CFS
at the northerly corporate limits to 303 CFS at the southerly corporate limits. Design
storm runoff from the I()()...year design ,torm varies from 65R CFS to 1157 CFS ilt the
northerly and southerly corporate limits respectively. In accordance with the
guidelines of this Drainage Master Plan and considering that any flows which overtop
the existing Pony Gulch channel pre,ent severe flooJing problem,. the major
slfLIctures along Pouy Gulch shall be designed to auequately convey the lOO-year
de,ign storm fLInoff. The following improvements arc recommended to drainage
structure~ of thc Pony Gulch watcr~hed which lie within the c<Jrporatc limits of
Cripple Creek,

l\. l'o!lyGulch

VI-l

VI-2
