CHAPTER II
INTERPRETATION AND USE OF REPORT DATA

tionsforRunningCreekare:

Flood Frequency and Discharge

I. Tahle-5,"FloodElevations".
2. Flooded Area Plates I through 4.
3. Flood Profiles on Plate a Sthrough 7.
4. Typical Cross Sectiou" on Plate a.

This report wss prepared to be compatible with the H.B.104l designation,
Federal Insurance Administration flood insurance raCe studies and can be
adopted by local governments for regulation purposes. The 10- and 100-year
flood events were used in the Running Creek analysis and the 5-, 10-, 50-, and
IOO-year flood events were used in the Elizsbeth drainage study.

,
;
,
,

The locations for the Elizabeth major drainageways are:

These flood events have a probability of occurring once in the number
of years indicated. For example, the lOO-year floodhaa a one percent chance
of being equaled or exceeded in anyone given year.

I. Table-a, "Flood Elevations".
2. Flooded Area Plates 9 through 11.
3. Flood Profiles on Plates 12 through 14.
4. Typical Cross Sections on Plates 15 through 16.

The most important use of the 100-year flood flow is for the description
of the floodplain and its land use regulation. The Colorado State .tatutes
consider the 100-year flood as the flood event to be used in designing and
protecting all buildings and s:ructures to be used for human occupancy. The
IOO-year flood is accepted neatly nationwide for th"s~ purposes.

The flood profiles may be used in areas where controver~y arisea over
the 100-year flood boundsry shown on the flOoded area plates. Since the flood
profiles give the el€vationand distance or stationing homaknown point,
the high water elevations csn be conveyed to the ground. Two control markers

Information concerning marc frequent flood events is provided for uSe
by the Town of Eli~.,beth for planning purposes. The' design of roads and
drainage structures, minor channel improvements, and the planning of reCrea-
tional facilities may all be based On floods .maller than the lOO-year flood
magnitude.
