Many vehicles, homes and trailers were damaged or
destroyed. The total cost of the flood loss exceeded $60,000.
Major flooding occurred throughout the Animas, Florida, and Los
Pinos valleys in October, 1911 and July, 1927. The October, 1911
flood was the worst flood on record for the San Juan Drainage Basin.

3. Archuleta County

Major flooding along the San Juan River through PagosaSprings has

occurred during the fall of the year and is attributed to rain-

storms of long duration. Minor flooding in the spring, at more

frequent intervals, is caused by rapid snow melting during abnor~

mally warm weather. Localized cloudbursts during the summer months

have caused periodical flooding of small streams around and in pagosa

Springs, and along the Rio Blanco River in the Archuleta County.

The October 4, 1911 flood of the San Juan River Basin is the most

severe on record. A steady 24 hour rainfall on already saturated

soils caused the San Juan River to rise to a flood stage of 17.8

feet in Pagosa Springs. Damage was sever~ totaling approximately

$1,000,000. Two lives were lost during the flood. Both highway

bridges were lost as well as the power and light company and munici-

pal water plant. Many homes were washed from their foundations . .

The railroad to pagosa Junction was severely damaged with hundreds

of feet of track washed away. Other flooding in Archuleta County

-10-
