ment has been miniIM.I in th" flOQd pl"i.~ """"s considered in this
report. As a result, definitive records of past floods are extremely
m~qer for the ~kansas trib~taries such as Salt Cre"k.

CURRENT FLOOD SITUATION

Developments in the Fiood Plain
Plates 3 thro~gh 10 sr~w the study area limits and flood
plain of Salt Creek. Salt Creek is a relatively minor creek ~ith
intermittent flow in its upper reach. The natural stream has gained
in importance in that it is used as the runoff channel for the St.
Charles Flood Ditch and also in that the CF , I Steel Corporation has
erected two large storage reservoirs on the stream to provide water
for their industrial processes.
Before the construction of the St. Charles reservoirs,
the creek was confined in a rather bro~ shallow channel until it
reached the area of the present highway. There is a rather well
defined sinuous channel at this point continuing downstream some six
miles to the outlet at the Arkansas River. There is some evidence

frern geologic maps that the stream has not always been cOlllpletely
contained in the defined channel below t.he 1-25 brldg"s. It. appear~
that it has flowed at times in the past as overland sheet flo~ to the
area north of the present reservoirs into the Lake Minnequa area.

A~ost all of the Salt Creek channel is presently on
land owned by the CF & 1 Steel Corporation. The St. Charles reser-
'lOirS are owned and operat.ed byCl' & I with a portion of the ",ater
being used in their plant processes then returned to t.he river. The
GOnstructionoftlLeolJhighwayU.S.8S-B7andtheconstruct.ionof
the new Highway 1-25, both of which are elevat.ed, has served as a
barrier to foroe the overflow from Reservoir #2 and #3 overland in
.

the direction of the southwest part of the City west of the highways.
As Can be Seen on Plates 6 and 7 this flow moves north toward Lake

Minnequa, also known as St. Charles Reservoir No.1.

Obstructions to rlood Flows

Natur<ll obstructtons to flood flows include trees.
br"sh and other '.'''''J"t,~tic~. growing alo~,q the r,ver w.T'J<~.
