Approximately 30- to 40-foot trees ~re placed and anchored
at the shore II ne wi th stone f III and concrete or other type of ~e~dmen. The branched
port I on of the trees will be rest I 09 on the bed of the river to protect the banks from
direct river attack and to encourage the collection of debris. This type of protection Is
recommended for use In or near forested areas where a supply of trees would be available.
Tree retards are an attempt to reproduce natural conditions that occur when trees along
the shoreline are undercut by erosion, fall Into the stream, and form a natural barrier
against further erosion.

ADVANTAGES: 1) I nexpens I va.
2) Good job deflecting flow.
3) Good debris collector with silt depositor.
DISADVANTAGES: 1) Replacements are f~equent.
2) Protection Is only marginal.

19
