Acknowledgements

This Report was prepared from information obtained from the Corps and the Town of
Granada The assistance and cooperation of the following persons is acknowledged and is
appreciated. Mark Wittrock and Gail Stoclcton, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Albuquerque
District; Mark Stark, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, John Martin Dam Projects Office; and
Enerardo Tovar and Ron Hogan, employees of the Town of Granada.

COMMUNITY CHARACTERISTICS

The Town of Granada occupies a position in the Wolf Creek and Arkansas River
Hoodplain on the south bank of the Arkansf\S River in southeastern Colorado. The Town lies
along Wolf Creek about 2 miles upstream from it's conHuence with the Arkansas River.

Granada's population has been relatively stable and in 1993 was estimated as 516. The
Town is surrounded by agricultural land. U.S. Highway 50 and U.S. Highway 385, and thc
Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe (AT&SF) Railroad pass through the Town.

The climate of Granada is typical of the semiarid plains region east of the Rocky
Mountains and is subject to violent thunderstorms resulting in severe Hooding.

PROBLEMS AND NEEDS

flood History

A summary of past floods and flood data can be found in Appendix III.

The reach of Wolf Creek subject to flooding that affects Granada and surrounding
farmland lies west and north oithe Town. This reach extends from the AT&SF Railroad bridge
across Wolf Creek west of Town to its present confluence with the Arkansas River, about 2.5
miles downstream.

Granada has suffered numerous floods from Wolf Creek. Wolf Creek originally flowed
through the center of the Town. After the Jurle 1949 flood, Wolf Creek was diverted to the west
side of the Town and a levee constructed. The levee system had a capacity of about 12,500 c.f.s.
Granada experienced the flood of record with a devastating 35,300 c.f.s. in June 1965. The
floodflow breached the levee west of Granada and flooded the Town with depths up to 6 feet.

Related Reports and Information

The Corps prepared a draft report in July 1973, titled "Appendix I, Hydrology (Draft),
Detailed Project Report, Investigation for Flood Protection, Granada, Colorado", desGrlbing the
hydrology study for a proposed Corps' flood protection project.
