Colorado Earthquake Hazard

ture and lifelines, such as roads and electric lines,
are located along the Front Range urban corridor.
There are also many schools, hospitals, and other
critical facilities. Areas on the western slope and in
southern Colorado have a significant level of earth-
quake risk. Large earthquakes that occur in Utah,
New Mexico, and Wyoming also affect Colorado. For
example, Colorado was affected by the 5.5 magni-
tude Dulce, New Mexico earthquake on January 23,
1966. Damage occurred in Colorado from the 5.5
magnitude earthquake in Wyoming's Laramie
Mountains on October 18, 1984.

Listed below are 24 Colorado counties with the high-
est earthquake risk based upon population and seis-
mic activity.
. Denver (467,610)
. Adams (265,038)
. Douglas (60,391)
. Larimer (186,136)
. Clear Creek (7,619)
. Pitkin (12,661)
. Mesa (93,145)

. In
addition, infrastructure, special facilities, and criti-
cal facilities are at risk from earthquakes and other
natural hazards in Colorado.

Infrastructure and lifelines threatened by
earthquakes:

. power plants and transmission lines
. natural gas and petroleum lines
. highway. and bridges
. dams and irrigation infrastructure
. airport facilities and runways

COLORADO EARTHQUAKES
1870 TO PRESENT

,.....

,"-ow

,...ow

,...ow

. .
.'
10 0 .
?
