<br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />major townsites in the upper Lefthand Creek Basin. <br />affected in the downstream area. <br /> <br />Longmont is <br /> <br />The stream gauge history on Lefthand Creek has been sporadic. <br />Gauges were located toward the downstream portions of the creek (refer <br />to Appendix 11).168 Floods in the lower area of Lefthand Creek Basin <br />have generally been cited in reports as occurring on the same dates as <br />those on the lower St. Vrain. 169 The assumptions for the upper <br />Lefthand Creek basin are not as certain. Major floods in the basin <br />probably have occurred at the following tir.1es: <br /> <br />1864 <br />1876 <br />1894 <br />1896 <br />1897 <br />1918 <br />1921 - June 2-6 <br />1938 - September 3 <br />1949 - June 4 <br />1951 - August 3 <br />1963 <br />1969 - May 4-8 <br />1973 - May 5 <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Ward <br /> <br />Ward is located near the headwaters of Lefthand Creek. Although <br />inforr.1ation on the 1894 flood was uncovered in this study, additional <br />data have not been collected for that townsite's flood events.170 <br /> <br />Jamestown <br /> <br />Jamestown, founded in 1888, is located on James Creek, the major <br />tributary to Lefthand Creek. As Chapter II relates, the town was <br />severely impacted in 1894.171 The 1969 flood caused the same type of <br />devastation in Jamestown, as shown by the photographs below. mr. <br />Edward Anderson, a longtime resident of Jamestown who witnessed the <br />1969 flood, discussed the severity of that event. 172 Due to the <br />extensive damages to the public works, the town was declared a <br />disaster area by the Federal Government. 173 <br /> <br />DRY CREEK ClASIN <br /> <br />Dry Creek No, 2 <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Historically the area drained by Dry Creek No. 2 has been sparsely <br />populated. Afthoug h the creek flows by N iwot, and affects a number of <br />new subdivisions of Boulder and Longmont, it traverses mainly through <br />farmland south of Longmont. Stream gauges haVf~ been non-existent. <br />Consequently, information about floods on Dry Creek No. 2 has been <br />
