The entire creek bed was a "seething <br />mass of black water, bowlders [sic). and crushed buildings. "45 Trees <br />were torn up by the roots and roads were entirely destroyed. Nearly <br />ten families lost houses and moved up the canyon hillsides to temporary <br />quarters in quickly erected tents.46 J.C. Nial's business, the Golden <br />Nuggest, his residence, and his barn were destroyed.47 The Hurthey <br />Brothers lost several hundred feet of mining car track.48 <br /> <br />Camp Ni-wot and Altona <br /> <br />The two mining camps on Lefthand Creek just downstream from the <br />confluence of James Creek, Camp Ni-wot and Altona, were affected by <br />the floodwaters from both Lefthand Creek and its tributary James <br />Creek. <br /> <br />Jamestown <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Towns along James Creek suffered heavy damages as well. JaP.lestown <br />was completely washed out. 49 The Boulder Daily Camera <br />correspondent. Irvine reported that every building on the north side <br />of the stream was aff8cted by the floodwaters.50 Griff Evan's hotel, <br />the Lloyd and Company store and Faiver's store all suffered great <br />damage. The Golden Age Mill was destroyed and the Governor Group <br />Mill was severely damaged. Richardson's blacksmith shop washed away, <br />the only church was destroyed, and ten homes were completely swept <br />away. After the flood, the bed of James Creek [or Jim Creek as it was <br />called by local residents) stretched from canyon wall to canyon wall and <br />townspeople questioned where to rebuild.51 People were still living in <br />tents a month later. 52 <br /> <br />Springdale <br /> <br />First reports were that Springdale, just a few P.liles from Jamestown, <br />was .virtually gone after the flood swept through that settlement.53 <br />Although most houses were washed into JaP.les Creek, including <br />substantial portions of the Seltzer House hotel, the hot springs <br />survived the ravages of the debris-strewn waters.
