I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

Related Flood Studies

It is our understanding that previous floodplain information

studies similar to this study have not been conducted in the study area.

A limited work in connection with the ice jamming problems in Gunnison

River was performed by the U.S. Corps of Engineers in cooperation with

the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation.

Ice jam problems have been reported to occur in the Gunnison

River above Blue Mesa Reservoir. Ice forming in the river is carried

downstream to the reservoir as slush. As this slush reaches the res-

ervoir's iced surface, it may produce ice jams that could potentially

move upstream depending on the river conditions and climatological fac-

tors affecting such a development.

During the fall of 1971, the Corps of Engineers completed a

clearing and snag removal operation upstream of the Blue Mesa Reservoir

and construction of higher banks along the river. Additional clearing

at the upstream end of Blue Mesa Reservoir and removal of the river

banks upstream through the Cooper Ranch and Neversink properties was

completed in the summer of 1971.

A more detailed documentation of the ice jamming problems in

Gunnison River is presented later in this report. This documentation is

based on the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation observations of the problem

during the 1970-1974 period and the interviews conducted with the resi-

dents of the area.

U.S. Geological Survey in 1976 developed flows for the 10-,

50-, 100-, and SOD-year floods at selected sites near the study area.

These points corresponded to the location of streamflow gaging stations

and did not include any of the measuring stations within the study

reaches for this study.

7

~
