Inadequate understanding and formulation of the mechanics of bank <br />erosion, and, therefore, limited capability to incorporate this <br />contribution into the sediment input to the flows from bank erosion <br />and the effects of channel widening. <br /> <br />Numerical modelling of riverine processes will become a steadily more reliable <br />and increasingly powerful tool. The principal limitation on the methodology <br />likely will continue to be inadequate formulation of the constituent processes <br />enumerated above. Until these improvements are made, rigid-boundary models <br />should be utilized for flood-insurance studies, and attention should be <br />directed toward examining the sensitivity of these models to uncertainties and <br />variations in channel roughness, channel geometry, and channel slope. <br /> <br />xii <br />
