The highest flood known in this area occurred July 24J965 when

the north side of Agate Way was inundated by flood waters for about

2 blocks. Since this flood occurred, the bridge opening on Emerald Street

has been enlarged and a drainage ditch cut from Agate Way to the stream.

One of the principal flood proble~ is caused by the overtopping of the

Community Irrigation Ditch which diverts water from Coal Creek and flows
-~ _..._-----^._--_._--~_.__._-,-----"'-._--~ - ,-----

along the west and north side of town. When this canal is overtopped,

sheet flow can occur in parts of the town, mainly in the area of West 10th

and 11th Streets and to the east of Holly Drive. The water from the area

of West 10th and 1lth Streets flows down the side streets and Kohl Street

to 6th Street and into the creek. Some of this area is serviced by

storm drains. The water from the area east of Holly Drive flows into a

)

small drainage, through culverts on Miramonte Drive and Main Street, and

into Broomfield Reservoir. Local

changes in the drainage pattern caused
7
down East 7th Street, which was outside

,

high water on May 6, 1973 to flow

I
I
,

of the city limits. Water was reported to be backed up into basements

in this area due to infiltration from surface runoff into the sanitary

sewers.

)

4

,
