<br />. <br /> <br />CIlAPTERVII <br />STUDY AREA DESCRIPTION <br /> <br />Draina~e Basin and Study Reach Description <br /> <br />The Elizabeth drainage study encompasses an area approxi~ately 225 acres <br />and addresses the floodplain and drainage problems along major drainageways. <br />The location and outline of the contributing area is shown in Pigure-4 . <br /> <br />PART II <br />ELIZABETH DRAINAGE STUDY <br /> <br />The southern portion of the basin, comprising approximately 80 acres, lies <br />outside of the town limits. This area has good stands of ponderoaa pines with <br />grass understory. Slopes are fairly steep near the upper limit of the basin. <br />averaging approximately ten percent. Land use is projected to rem4in low-density <br />residential with lot .ires of five to ten acres. <br /> <br />The remaining portions of the drainage baain are within the Elizabeth town <br />limits, Although a number of undeveloped situ presently exiat, planned develop- <br />ment. are expected to be constructed in these areas in the next few year.. The <br />primary roning for the basin i. residential with strips of business zoning along <br />the highway and major streets. <br /> <br />Lots in the residential areas are relatively large, ranging in .ize from <br />approximately one-third ~cre to over one acre. Existing hornes typically have <br />lawns surrounding the house with natural graBs vegetatian in the rear lot area. <br />Streets and drives are grsvel surfaced with drainage ditChes on either side <br />but future i.mprovements may include asphalt pav"ment, curbs and gutter. <br /> <br />The study reach slong the Kennett Drainage begins nest the intersection of <br />Tabor Screet and County Rosd 13&. Thedrainageway runsspproxilllately 1,000 <br />feet between Tabor and South Chestnut Stteeto to a flood detention pond <br />nesr the center nf towo. Water diocharged frOlll the pond flows north alonR <br />Elbert Street to the Elm Street intersection where it combines with the Pine <br />Ridge Drainage. The Pine Ridge DrainagedrainR the northwest area of towo. <br />Prom this point the Kennett Drainage flows northwest across Broadway and pine <br />Street to the inlet of a concrete box culvert at Sanner Street. The culvert <br />conveys runoff east along State Highway 8& to Running Creek. Photos at vari- <br />uus points in the study area are included on Pages 38 through 40. <br /> <br />-3&- <br />
