people who do not live in high flood risk
areas do not think about flood insuranee--
until it is too late, The areas that were hit
with this flood, however, tend to receive at
least minor floods relatively eonsistently. So
either flood insuranee is unaffordable for
many people in these areas, people do not
choose to budget for it, or they are unaware
of it,

This editorial note was published in the
Pueblo Chieftain following the flood. It
reflects the general community's confusion
regarding exaetly what NFIP eovers and
does not eover. Some people also believe
their homeowners' insurance will cover flood
damage,

Flood insurance'
. I' would like The Chieftain to
check out flood insurance. It seems a lot
of people have insurance and were told
it was good and then they find out later
that it was not. .
. As for the insurance companies
not paying for thi~ recent st~rm' because
of clients not haVIng flood msurance, I
disagree; My howie sits high on a hill
and I have 8-foot extensions from the
downspOUts: The rain was so intense, it
'still flooded my basement and garage,
That is a direct result of a S-inch rain.
No curbs overflowed, it was just direct
out of the sky. I would like to hear oth-
ers' input on this matter,
Editor's note: As we reported Satur-
day in an article on the topic, homeown-,
er's policies don't cover floods, The only
way to. get flood ,coverage is, to buy it
from the National Flood Insurance Pro-
gram, available from local agents,

The Pueblo Chieftain, June 1994, Editorial section

PuehID FIDod H QtIlrd Mitil!aJ;on PIDn

And why not the eonfusion? Most
homeowners' polieies eover you if your dog
bites the mail earrier! As mentioned earlier,
private insuranee eompanies just could not
afford to eover flood losses. Still, many
people are not sure exactly what kinds of
flood damages are eovered under NFIP,

Here is some very basic information about
what it eovers:

I_f.

~unusualiuid rapid accumulation or '

;.~;~~.~~t

The inundated area needs to.
