I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

REPORT OF THE lO-YEAR, 2.5-YEAR, AIID
STANDARD PROJECT FLOOD EVEI1TS (Spr-)

by Gerald }ulvey 8/31/74

The aim of this supplemental report is to describe the
rough areal precipitation coverage and approximate center of
the precipitation area resulting from the la-year, 2.5-year,
and standard project flood events.

I. Climatological Assessment 2[ Synootic Conditions

The synoptic analysis performed for the laO-year
even t is applicable to these studi es f'or 1h e raaa::> ns
outlined in the August 3, 1974 report. The result is
the same and the synoptic condition most likely to give
a la-year, 2.5-year, and standara project flood event
during the summer months is a convective storm, namely
a cumulonimbus cloud system.

II. Location and Areal Distribution 2[ h'ecipitation

A. Location 2[ Cloud Systems (General)

The general locations of the cloud systems are
the same as for the lOa-year event as outlined in
t..l1.e August 3 report; namely, the Red Hountain -
Hount Silverheels complex, and the Bald Hountain -
Boreas Mountain complex. The general location was
chosen for the reasons outlined in Part II-A of
the above-mentioned report. The detailed locations
of the systems presently under study will be out-
lined later in this report.

& Areal Distribution

The same general approach that was used in the
lOO-year event study will be used here. In brief:

1. A cri tical updraft area was calculated from
average vertical velocity and eff'iciency of'
northeast Colorado storms (see Appendix I
and Appendix I, August 3 report).
2. This was compared against average northeast
Colorado updraf't size.
3. A cell site was determined f'rom an eff'ective
elevated area, general synoptic f'low condi-
tions, and the peculiar meso-scale flow
patterns of' the ridge-valley system. {see
App endix II).
