ANTELOPE CREEK, NEBRASKA <br />(Tributary of Salt Creek in Linooln) <br /> <br />Flood of 14 June <br /> <br />1. Cause.- Raini'all totalling approximately 2.1 inches <br />oocurred over the AnteloPe Creek. dl'ainage.'area <;>n 14 June. The <br />channel of Antelope Creek was too small to contain the flow which <br />resulted and flcoding oocurred... Inadequate bridge openings, <br />floating debris, and the .s~all size of the conduit at 24th and. <br />M Streets aggravated the flood sitUation. A newly developed,resi- <br />dential area betv,een 40th and 56th streets south. of Randolph <br />Street in Lincoln, which had not been provided with adequate <br />storm sewer facilities, speeded the runoff of surface waters. <br /> <br />2. Extent.- Flooding ooourred over an area estimated at <br />approximately 760 acres adjacent to Antelope Creek from the head- <br />waters to the State Fair Grounds in Lincoln, Nebraska,a distance <br />of some 5.5 miles. <br /> <br />3. Duration.- <br />at about 6 :30 p.m., <br />same day. <br /> <br />This WaS a flash flood. Overbank flow started <br />15 June and oeased at about 10:30 p.m. of the <br /> <br />4. Stages and discharges.- No data available, however, at <br />no time were the stages exoessively high. <br /> <br />5. Damages.- Flood damages were of a moderate nature, with <br />the worst damage ocourring to business places in the vicinity of <br />27th and Randolph Streets. In this vicinity 92 small establish- <br />ments were inundated. 66 of which had water. up to 4 feet deep on <br />the first floors. Of the .298 residences flooded, 13 had water <br />over the first floors and 92 suffered basement wall failures. <br />The asphalt. topping was stripped from 5 blocks of paving. The <br />ballast w~s'removed from approximately 800 feet of Chicago, Rock <br />Island and Paoific Railroad traoks. Considerable flood-borne <br />debris and sediment were deposited in the area. There was no <br />loss of human life. <br /> <br />15 <br />
