<br />Flood of Monday, May 22. 1876

<br />The flood of May 22,1876 waS a "sustained" flood caused by rapid
<br />snowm~lt in the mountains and heavy gcn~ral rains.9 The peak discharge
<br />es~imated by the Corps of Engineers using slope-area ~ea.urements and
<br />high ~atermarks was 13,200 cfs. The flOod began about Monday noon, and

<br />This flood ~as slightly larger than the ma~nitude of the 100-year peak
<br />discharge of 12,280 at Erie computed by the Soil Conservation Service in
<br />their October 1976 study. The appro~imate limits of the flood of 1876
<br />were iodicated 00 a flood control plan prepared by the Army Corps of

<br />Engineers 1n 1944 and arc shown In hgure-. A ncwopaper account rOm
<br />the Greeley Sun reproduced in this report indicated that damage occurred
<br />to houses, businesses. bridges, and about 70 rods (1,555 feet) of railroad
<br />ttack. Apparently no live. were lost in this flood, Erie's largest,
<br />which occurred vcry early in the history of the town.

<br />some people say lt was on Hollbrnok Street. Some s<lY that
<br />when floods occ~rred. skeltonG were wasbed ~p by the waters,
<br />and boys and girls would go down to the creek ani di~ th~rn
