<br />McKee Inc. informed the City of their intentions and solicited any <br />information on new developments or existing problems in the study <br />area. <br /> <br />A legal notice was placed in the Gunnison County Times one day a <br />week, for three consecutive weeks, beginning October 22, 1979, to <br />notify all interested persons of the beginning of the study and its <br />objectives and to solicit any relevant facts and technical data <br />concerning local flood hazards. <br /> <br />Federal, State and local agencies were contacted regarding the <br />availability of any reports, studies, or investigations which may <br />contain some information relative to flooding problems in the <br />community. Information was received from FEMA and CWCB. <br /> <br />During the course of the study, the results of hydrologic analyses <br />and flood elevations and boundaries, prepared by Engineering <br />Consultants, Inc, (Reference 1), for the City of Gunnison, Gunnison <br />County and CWCB, were reviewed. As a result of this review and <br />coordination with FEMA and CWCB, the information supplied was used <br />in this Flood Insurance Study. <br /> <br />2.0 AREA STUDIED <br /> <br />2.1 Scope of Study <br /> <br />This Flood Insurance Study covers the incorporated areas of the <br />City of Gunnison, Gunnison County, Colorado, The ~n'd of study is <br />shown on the Vicinity Map (Figure 1). <br /> <br />The limits of detailed and approximate studies in Gunnison were <br />determined by FEMA with community and study contractor consultation <br />at the meeting in June, 1979. <br /> <br />Floods caused by overflow of the Gunnison River and Tomichi Creek <br />were studied in detail within the corporate limits of Gunnison. <br /> <br />The areas studied by detailed methods were selected with priority <br />given to all known flood hazard areas, and areas of projected <br />development or proposed construction for the next five years, <br />through January, 1985, <br /> <br />Approximate analyses were used to study those areas having a low <br />development potential or minimal flood hazards. The scope and <br />methods of study were proposed to and agreed upon by FEMA, and the <br />City of Gunnison. <br /> <br />2.2 Community Description <br /> <br />The City of Gunnison is located in southwestern Colorado in the <br />central portion of Gunnison County, The total land area contained <br />within the corporate boundaries is 3.1 square miles. The Colorado <br />Population Report Series CP-26 #79(C-l) reported the population of <br />Gunnison in 1979, as 5,311 (Reference 2). Economic activities of <br /> <br />2 <br />
