<br />plain were evacuated. A dike on north 9th Avenue broke early on <br />the 23rd resulting in flooding of a residential area there. No <br />bridges were destroyed although a number were closed to traffic <br />during the flooding. It was reported that about 170 acres were <br />flooded in Greeley. Damages were suffered to irrigation <br />structures upstream of Greeley. <br />Flood of 3-4 August 1951. A heavy rainstorm over the <br />Rocky Mountain foothills on 3 August 1951, with nearly 12 inches <br />measured near Bellevue, Colorado in the Cache la Poudre River <br />basin, caused severe flooding along that stream. No damages were <br />reported in the study reach and accounts of the flood indicate <br />that the Fort Collins area was not affected. <br />Flood of June 1965. Heavy to torrential rainfall over <br />large portions of the South Platte River basin with the Cache la <br />Poudre River basin receiving its greatest amounts on 14 and 15 <br />June caused flooding throughout the study reach. Flood damage at <br />Greeley was estimated at S85,OOO. Rural damages were about <br />$700,000 for the Cache la Poudre River basin including the study <br />reach. The Greeley Tribune of 17 June 1965 reported: <br />"The Cache la Poudre was spreading out into the lowlands <br />north and east of Greeley. . . Police were forced to close the <br />6th Avenue bridge and the 5th Street bridge. . . At 5th Street, <br />water was spilling out of the banks to the east on the north side <br />of the bridge. <br /> <br />19 <br />
