PAWNEE CREEK

Flood History. Accounts of flooding along Pawnee Creek are
not abundant. Since several floods have undoubtedly occurred,
the apparent lack of flood data is probably the result of the
rural nature of Pawnee Creek. Residents of the Pawnee Creek
area, however, indicate that flooding occurs about once every 5
to 10 years along Pawnee Creek. Available flood accounts
indicate flooding did occur in 1883, 1894, 1914, 1921, 1935, and
1965.

Flood of June 1965. Flooding of 14 and 15 June due to
heavy rainfall caused considerable flood damage throughout the
lower reaches of Pawnee Creek. Hundreds of acres of cropland
were inundated. Atwood, Colorado was completely inundated by
floodwaters. Floodwater overtopped highway and railroad grades
east of Atwood. Pawnee Creek floodwaters flowed in an easterly
direction toward Sterling causing the inundation of portions of
Sterling.

8
