<br />Natural and beneficial FloodPlainValu~ <br />Flood plains along t~e various tributaries contain areas of irrigated <br />pasture ana nayland interspersed with areas of natural _egetation. The <br />flood plain _egetation consists of a _ariety of forbs, grasses, sedges and <br />rushes interspersed with cottonwoods, willows and siberian elm . The <br />meanderi ng channe 1 provi des an i nteres t i ng di ~ers i ty in 1 andscape and <br />vegetation, This diversity enhances t~e visual aestheties and wildlife <br />habitat ~alues in the area. <br />T~ese flood plains support a variety of wildl ite species suc~ as; <br />mule deer, coyote, cottontail, red-winged blackbird. blue herron, song <br />sparrow, black-~eaded grosbeak. red-tai led hawk. golden eagle, bald eagle, <br />Canada goose, mallard and many other species of wildlife. These reparian <br />areas are very important in the arid regions of Colorado. The proximity <br />to water and robust vegetation supported by the water regime attract more <br />species of wildlife to this habitat type than any other in western <br />Colorado. <br /> <br />~ELATED FLOOD STUDIES <br />Toe Cor~s of Engineers, SacralTle'lto Di strict, prepared an Internal <br />Official M€1lIOrandumReport "Flood Ins<.lranceStudy Hydrology, Garfield and <br />Mesa Counties, Colorado" dated November 1975. This was a relatively broad <br />study that included drainage area vs. C1Jbic feet per second per square <br />mile envelope curves. The curves were intended for estimating peak <br />discharges on streams in Garfield and Mesa Counties, COlorado, for flood <br />insurance purposes. <br />The Corps of Engineers, Sacramento District, prepared a flOOd plain <br />information report "ColoradO River and ~ifle, Go_ermTlent, and HUl)bard <br />GUlCh Creeks' (Apr1973). The Corps is currently involved in an <br />additional study of the ColoradO River Main Stem that extendS beyond the <br />limits of this 1973 study. <br />The Soil Conservation Service carried out a Flood Plain Management <br />Study on ParaChute Creek and Roan Creek (Aug 19~5). <br />The Soil Conservation Service carried out a Flood Plain Management <br />Study on 10 tributaries to the Colorado River in the vicinity of Glenwood <br />Spri ng~ and N.."
