<br />Pierce. These storm systems develop during the afternoon to <br />early evening during May - September. <br /> <br />Documentation of historic floods and damage estimates for <br />Spring Creek date back to 1917. Based on interviews with <br />citizens of the Town, it has been dete,"mined that Pie'"ce has <br />experienced many flood events. Floods have occurred in <br />1917, 19:3:3, 19:35, 1951, 1954, 1961, 1965, 1972, 1975, 1977, <br />1'787, 1988. In 1935, 19"':.5, 1972, 1987, and 198::: the <br />floodwaters overtopped Rowe Avenue and flowed down U.S. <br />Highway 85, and inundated areas to the Wests and East of the <br />highway. At times floodwaters overtop the Union Pacific <br />Ra i I t"oad tt"acks, and eventua II y move southeaste,' I y e,ver <br />farmlands back to Spring Crek. Past floods have caused <br />erosion of the town streets, flooding of structures and <br />basements, damage to the Pierce water system and grain <br />elevator and blocked off the Pierce Laterial Canal and <br />irrigation ditches with sediment. In the more recent floods <br />of August 11, 1987 and June 25, 1988, much of the Town of <br />Pierce was inundated by floodwater. This <br />flood occur-red as a r-esult (If a five-inch rainfall west of <br />Nunn. Thirty-six resid~nces, one school, and one business <br />were inundated during the June 25, 1988 flood. This flood <br />occurred as the result of a three to four inch rainfal I from <br />a thunderstorm west of Nunn. These floods generally occur <br />in the early evening with approximately one hour of warning <br />time for the Town from upstream reporters.
