The process of determining the <br />probable maximum flood is an example of a deterministic <br />process. Detenninistic contrasts with probabilistic <br /> <br />Emergency <br /> <br />In terms of dam operation, any condition which develops <br />naturally or unexpectedly, endangers the integrity of the <br />dam and downstream property or life, and requires <br />immediate action <br /> <br />Emergency Preparedness Plan <br /> <br />Document which contains procedures for dealing with <br />various emergencies, as well as communication <br />directories and inundation maps showing upstream and <br />downstream water levels and times of anival of floods <br />which would result from the failure of the dam or its <br />appurtenances <br /> <br />Event tree analysis <br /> <br />A technique which describes the possible range and <br />sequence of the outcomes which may arise from an <br />initiating event <br /> <br />Expected value <br /> <br />The average or central tendency of a random variable. <br />Specifically in risk analysis, the product of probability of <br />an event and of its consequences <br /> <br />Extreme event <br /> <br />Event which has a very low annual exceedance probability <br />(AEP) <br /> <br />Factor of safety <br /> <br />In structural and other engineering systems, the ratio of <br />system resistance to the peak design loads <br /> <br />Failure of dam <br /> <br />In tenns of structural integrity, the uncontrolled release of <br />the contents of a reservoir through collapse of the dam or <br />some part of it; in terms of performance to fulfil its <br />intended function, the inability of a dam to perform <br />functions such as water supply, prevention of excessive <br />seepage or containment of hazardous substances <br /> <br />Failure mode and <br />analysis <br />(FMEA) <br /> <br />effects A procedure by which potential failure modes in a <br />technical system are analysed.
