June 6, 1990

DamageAssessment

Damage assessment is a continuous
process whereby local government officials
evaluate either potential or actual condi-
tions and determine the course(s) of action
that must be taken to alleviate the disaster
emergency conditions. When the assess-
ment for each specific area is ac-
complished it will provide a true picture of
the impact to the community. Local
governments can then direct their forces
on a priority basis for recovery. If assis-
tance is needed, these needs can be re-
quested from state and federal government
sources, and coordinated through the local

---

l:mergency management agency and the
Colorado Office of Emergency Manage-
ment (OEM).

The damage assessment:

Provides information to assist in estab-
lishing priorities for recovery.

Coordinates the function of the various
agencies within local government

Provides information on the damage
assessment process in the event of a
city, county, state, or federal presiden-
tial disaster declaration.

One
