CHERRY CREEK

In 1858, Inrlians told of great floods on Cherry Creek in times past~
but their stories ,,"ere not taken for fact. The :first flood of reeord
occurred 011 ~lay 1~-20, 1864, and a personal account of the flood.
includes; "we could see the inky waYes, 15 to 20 feet high, carrying
trees, houses, tattle, and sheep-and for all we know, human beings--
to certain destruction" (Colorado Mag., May 1927, in Follansbee and
Sawyer, 1948, 1', 60), "rajor floods o('('lllTNI on "ray 22, 1876, and
"fay 22, 1878, and a greater one occurred on .July 26, 1885. The flood
of .July 14, 191:2, came from heavy raius on about 100~200 square miles
near Park{,l" The peak discharge determined by a slope-are.."1. Bleasure-
lllent aboye Parker was 14,500 cfs.
.\n estimate of 17,000 <'is was made after the flood of .July 28,
lU22, a.t :.1.. site about :~ Iniles north of or downstream from Parker.
The failure of Castlewood ]}al11 on .Aug. 3, 193;~, caused the largest
tlood on Cherry Creek prior to 1965. Inflow to Castlcwood Dam
peaked near ;\;\000 ofs, and the stored water released when the dam
failed caused a peak dis('har!!:e estimated at 126,000 ofs just below
the dam. This peak flow diminished to 15,000 cfs at Dem'er.
Sillce 1033, a- detention reser\"()ir, and since H)j;O, Cherry Creek
Resen-oil' ha\"e contained the large floods on Cherry Creek. The peak
intlo,,' to ('herry Creek Reser\'Oil' in .June 196:; was about 59,000 ofs.
