.

11

.

VI. Concl usions
As presently conceivtld, the proposed researcll will be invaluable to
the t<1ountain Ute people in their attempt to improve the quality of
reservation life through careful development of the reservation re-
sources and the introduction of greater economic viabil ity to the
reservation and its Indian COf:lmunity. As mentioned previously, careful
assessment of the reservation's viater resource in terms of development
plans for the fclarcos Canyon and the Ute cattle ranch appear integral
to any successful development plans. This research endeavor proposes
to carefully evaluate and consider these factors in terms of realistic
development models and tlleir concommitant social costs. Above all,
the proposed research seeks tu alloll for triual direction, control,
and cooperation throughout the researc;l effort and to construct
development models \'ihich take into consideration the cultural context
of the liountai n Ute people as lie 11 as tile i r needs, des i res and reserva-
tion limitations. Finally, it s;lOuld be pointed out that the proposed
research has receiv:O!u the enthusiastic suplJort of officials on the Ute
Nountain Reservation (see Attachment J).

VII. Budgetary Request
The following represents a realistic budgetary estimate for the
proposed research. Also, this budgetary request reflects matching
funds provided by the f10untain Ute Tribal Council as indications of
their desire for a research project of tilis nature (see Appendix A).
The amount requested is very modest compared to many \1ays tile govern-
ment might elect to invest in tile Ute Indian people. The results of
this effort hold the promise of s"ignificantly contributing to the
solution of pressing tribal problems.

pi""
