Currently, a channel <br />restoration study is underway. Recommendations from the study will address actions <br />that can be taken to improve channel conveyance. <br /> <br />5. Future Flood Hazard Mith!ation Activities <br /> <br />1. Prevention: <br />Steps have already been taken by La Junta and Otero County officials as regards: planning, <br />acquiring and demolishing vacant and unsafe floodplain structures, and in regulating the <br />development or land use to keep problems from getting worse. The building, zoning, planning <br />and land use offices of each entity administer preventive measures. <br /> <br />2. Property Protection: <br /> <br />Protecting individual buildings or properties from flood damage is the responsibility of property <br />owners, although government agencies will provide infonnation and technical or financial <br />assistance to the owners as such assistance becomes available. <br /> <br />3. Flood Control: <br /> <br />Flood control activities for both La Junta and Otero County are outlined in this plan, including <br />those that address both structural and non-structural abatement measures. The measures are <br />the responsibility of both homeowners and government' engineers and managed by public <br />works staff. <br /> <br />4. Emergency Services: <br /> <br />Measures that are taken during a flood to minimize the impact, These measures are the <br />responsibility of the Otero County Sheriff Department's emergency management staff and the <br />owners or operators of critical facilities, All such measures will be coordinated with other <br />departments of city and county government. <br /> <br />The activities listed below are those for which the City of La Junta and Otero County will seek <br />funding from FEMA's Flood Mitigation Assistance Program (FMAP).
