irrigation diversion structures and other river-
ine improvements, Inundation of agricultural
areas has eroded the land; damaged or
destroyed crops; damaged irrigation systems
and other farm improvements; reduced crop
yields due to increased salinity of soil; and
deposited sand, silt, and debris on cropland,
livestock have had to be protected by moving
them to high ground. Major floods have
required evacuation of homes and resulted in
damaged or destroyed public utility facilities,
roads and road bridges, and railroad track and
railroad bridges, The costs of recovery from
floods have been substa~tial.

Streamflow in the Gunnison River basin is
regulated by Taylor Park, Blue Mesa, Morrow
Point, Crystal, and Paonia Reservoirs, which
aggregate 1,208,800 acre-feet of multiple-
purpose storage. Ridgway Reservoir, a Water
and Power Resources Service improvement on
the Uncompahgre River just upstream from
Cow Creek, is scheduled for completion in
1984. Its operation on the basis of snowmelt
forecasts would afford minimal flood control
benefit. Streamflow in both the Gunnison and
Uncompahgre basins is also influenced by
irrigation diversions,
