<br />This information is important to public agencies and private citizens coneerned with future
<br />land dpvelopments.
<br />Tht. flood-prone areas han' bt'en delint"ated throug-h use of readily available informa-
<br />tion on paRt floods rather than from detailNI fil>ld surveys and inspections. In general.
<br />the delineated areas are for natural conditions and do not take into consideration the pos~
<br />sible ('(fects of existin.'{ or proposed flood control structures except where tho:-oe effects
<br />could b{' evaluated. Flood areas have been identified for: (1) urban areas where the up-
<br />stream drainage basin excet>ds 25 square miles. (2) rural areas in humid regions when> the
<br />upstream draina~e basin exceedf' 100 square miles. (:n rural areas in semiarid regions where
<br />tht' upstl'f'am drainage basin exceeds 2.50 square miles, and (4) smaller drainag-e basins,
<br />depending on topography and potential use of the flood plains.
<br />The l'S9th ('ongrpss, in House Document .H';.). recommended the preparation of flood-prone
<br />area maps to assist in mini mizing flood losses by quickly identifying the areas of potential
<br />flood hazardR. Mon.' di'lnilt.c1 flood information may be required for other purposes such
<br />as structural designs, e{'()Ilomic sturlies, or formulation of land-usl> regulations. Such de-
<br />tailed Information may be obtained from the U.S. Geological Survey, other Federal agencies,
<br />or State, local. and private agencies.
