b. Removal of the pervious sandy m~.terial in the stream bed.
is necessary in order to eliminate the possibility of seepagr>.

c.'Stripping of the f01ll1dation and removal of all weathered
shale is necessary' to provide a good bond between the embankment and
the foundation.

d. An adequate quantity of suitable random borro", material
is available for the construction of the embankment.

III - HYDRAULIC DESIGN

3-01. Hydraulie requirements. - The hydraulic requirements of the
Pinon Canon Da~l-are .based on effeetively controlling the standard proj-
eet and spillwi'.;Y design floods described in appendix I. The hydraulic
desigh provides. for the following requirements.

a. Outlet. wo:::'ks.

(1) Sufficient eapacity to drain the reservoir within
. .a reasonable . length of time and yet not exceed the downstream ehannel
capaeity when eombined with the runoff from the uneontrolled area.

(2) Adequate provision to dissipate the excess hydro-
. dynamie energy of outflolv..

b. Spillway.

(1) Sufficient eapaeity to aceommodate the spillway

design flood.

(2)
crest from scour.

Proteetion of the hydraulie control at the spillwa:'F
\

3-02. Outlet works. - The outlet works would consist of an
appr'oa<;h chanhel, trash .rack structure, outlet condu.i.t, and stilling
.basin as shown on plate 4 of the project report. A pilot ehannel down-
stream from the outlet works would be provided to permit ,reduetion in
wall heights of the. stilling basin. The governing feature in.the
hydraulic design is the un. eontrolled conduit which would be located
about the cerrterofthe dam and would extend 3g9 feet from entrance
headwall to exit headwall~ In the interests of suitability and economlf,
a,2-foot square reinforeed conerete box conduit was, adopted. having
..3.78 square feet of area. The condUit would be laid on straight align-
. ment and a constant slope of 0.03598. At 101./ stages and part-full
flow, "the hydraulie eontrol would be at the intake headwall. Flm'T for
this eondition was computed by the formula:

-3-

J_ppendix II

.
