<br />wells is typically less than 100 ft. The City has water rights for these <br />wells that total approximately 14 cfs. Conditional groundwater decrees <br />have been acquired for the future construction of four additional wells. <br /> <br />Water Quality of the well field is such that, with the exception of <br />Well #4, the water need only be chlorinated before entering the system. <br />Because filtration is required on Well #4, it is used strictly in a <br />backup mode. <br /> <br />The city's water system is used almost exclusively to meet potable <br />water demands. Lawn and garden irrigation requirements are, for most of <br />the city, met by a separate surface irrigation water system containing <br />untreated water supplied by the Gunnison Town Ditch. Domestic water taps <br />are metered, with the college being the largest user of domestic water. <br />The city has no industrial customers who are significantly large water <br />users. <br /> <br />There is a tendency for the aquifer to be depleted through the <br />wi nter months because of reduced recharge rates. Th is is due to frozen <br />ground and the cessation of surface irrigation. With domestic water <br />requirements gradually increasing, a deficiency in the ground water <br />supply is projected for the future. Studies conducted over the past <br />several years have been aimed at enabling the city to posture itself for <br />development of surface water supplies at the appropriate time in order to <br />avert a critical shortage. The latest study, completed by WRC <br />Engineering, Inc. (1981) recommends converting to a surface water supply <br />using the existing O'Fallon Ditch diversion on the Gunnison River below <br />A1mont to deliver water to a new 5 MGD water treatment plant. The <br />proposal also includes 40,000 ft of 24-inch transmission line. The city <br />has a conditional decree (1957 adjudication) for 10 cfs of O'Fa110n Ditch <br />water to be used for non-irrigating purposes. That recommended <br />development has not been implemented to date because near-term water <br />supplies are considered to be adequate.
