I
II
I
I
I

27

table. This is of particular importance for the Viele Lake Basin between
South Broadway and the Turnpike. This lowering of the groundwater table
will have a beneficial effect for the urbanizing area. Steps have been
taken for the City to claim this water for beneficial use.

Sediment that is produced in the foothi lis and carried down to the plains
portion of the basins will settle out in the proposed channels. This sedi-
ment must be collected at the canyon mouths in sediment basins and mechan-
ically removed. The day-to-day flow of the creeks wi 11 produce relatively
little sediment. Most of the sediment will come down out of the foothills
during rainstorms. Sediment producing storms are expected to occur several
times a year. The major sediment ponds will be on Bear Creek.

I
I
I
I
I

The sediment collected in the basins can be used for construction purposes
in order to help pay for sediment removal operations, and to attempt to con-
vert this "resource out of place" to a resource of beneficial use to the com-
munity. It is for this same reaSOn that the City has claimed the project
developed water, which is in accordance with the DRCOG Manual.

From a hydrological standpoint, it is advantageous to couple waterways with
greenbelts and open space. The uses are not only compatible in the Boulder
area, but create mutual benefits.

I
I

I
t

I
I

I
I
I
