Alternative B - BackwaterlWetland Complex Only: This alternative consists of
constructing a backwater/wetland complex that would be hydraulically connected to the river near
the downstream portion of the project site at two locations. The existing river controls along the
right bank would be lowered to allow the free exchange of water and aquatic species between the
main channel and the backwater complex. In addition, a vegetation schematic was developed for
this alternative and is shown on Exhibit 7. No wetlands would be impacted to construct the
backwater/wetland complex. Approximately 0,6 acres of riparian forest would be impacted to
create the two connections between the river and the backwater complex. The excavated material
would be disposed of at two separate locations, as shown on Exhibit 7, Characteristics of the
backwater/wetland area are presented in Table 5.

W r I
I. 70% of area with depths I. Alternative C - Terrestrial Habitat Only: This alternative consists of developing
terrestrial habitat features and managing the site to preserve these features. The various planting
zones are shown on Exhibit 8. As with Alternatives A and B, 78 acres of the site would be used
for rowcrop production. All existing wetlands and riparian woodlands would be preserved.
Approximately 350 acres of the site would be reforested and approximately 120 acres of grassland
would be established.

d. Alternative D - No Federal Action: This alternative consists of no construction
or plantings (except for agricultural) at the Langdon Bend site. Federal funds would not be spent
to meet site development objectives, All existing wetlands and riparian woodlands would be

27
