ALTERNATIVES

Three alternatives were considered for restoring habitat functions to the Langdon Bend
project. These alternatives generally consist of construction measures, vegetative plantings, and
operation and maintenance plans. Alternatives were formulated with the intent to accomplish the
goals and objectives outlined in the Missouri River Bank Stabilization and Navigation Fish and
Wildlife Mitigation Project. A No Federal Action alternative was also considered.

A conceptual vegetation planting schematic has been developed for each alternative except
for the No Federal Action alternative. The Corps will coordinate with Nebraska State resource
agencies when developing the fmal planting plan for the preferred alternative. Table 4
summarizes the acreages to be devoted to agriculture, forest preservation, forest creation, and
grassland establishment for each alternative. Of the 78 acres devoted to agriculture, a portion of
the acreage will be left unharvested for use by wildlife.

Table 4: Langdon Bend Project
Vegetation Summary
Alternatives
A B C D
Acres to be kept in Agricultural 78 78 78 78
Production
Acres of Existing Forest to be Preserved 152 173 174 174
Acres of Grassland to be Established 462 373 122 *
Acres of Proposed Reforestation (riparian) 0 0 105 *
Acres of Proposed Reforestation 0 0 246 *
(bottomland hardwood)
* The site would be allowed to naturally succeed. Presumably, grassland and woodlands
would develop, although the timeframe and spatial configuration is unknown.

Grasslands will be established by seeding.
