SITE OB.JECTIVES

The Langdon Bend Project is part of the Missouri River Fish and Wildlife Mitigation
Project, the objective of which is to restore large-river habitat and associated chutes and
backwaters, and wetlands in the floodplain adjacent to the main channel of the Missouri River.
The measurable goals and objectives are outlined in Table 3. The project is intended to restore
riverine fish spawning, feeding, and rearing habitat, as wen as terrestrial habitat. Habitat
diversity will be increased by supplemental backwater and wetland areas. Wildlife habitat will
be enhanced through the creation of aquatic beds/emergent wetlands and nesting habitat.

Table 3: Langdon Bend Project
Goals, Objectives, and Features
Goals Objectives Features
Restore riverine fish Restore hydraulic connection Restore fisheries habitat access
spawning, feeding, and to the Missouri River through chute channel by
rearing habitat lowering river control structures
and constructing a pilot channel
Increase diversity by Provide a minimum of 100 acres
expanding backwater and of wetted area at normal open
wetland areas water stages through dredging
Restore terrestrial habitat Restore hydraulic connection Restore wildlife habitat and
in point bar areas to the Missouri River vegetation by allowing chute
channel development by
lowering rivet control structures
Increase diversity by adding Allow for succession of
wetlands vegetation vegetation
Encourage restoration of Construct backwater area
wildlife through excavation and provide
four (4) islands for wildlife
habitat
Enhance wildlife habitat Increase aquatic Construct chuteslbackwater areas
bed/emergent wetland area
and quality
Improve feeding and resting Provide nesting opportunities and
habitat unharvested crops

22
