Valley cross sections

are presented to indicate ground level across the valley at

specified locations and the overlying flood depths. The flood

profiles and flooded area data presented are based on future,

developed conditions in the basin as determined from current

master planning maps. possible future improvements to control

floods are not a consideration of this report.

The report provides supplemental information to the Flood In-

surance Study for Arapahoe County, prepared for the Federal

Insurance Administration.

- STUDY AREA DESCRIPTION -
Community Description

The report was prepared by Gingery Associates, Inc., Consulting

Engineers, Englewood, Colorado, at the request of the Urban Drainage

& Flood Control District.

Arapahoe County is located in central Colorado, just south and

east of Denver, the State capitol. The general physical boun-

dary is that of a rectangle 12 miles by 72 miles, which extends

from near the foothills of the Rocky Mountains to the open

plains of eastern Colorado, covering approximately 864 square

miles. ~rapahoe County was the first designated county in the

state even though at that time, the county, which comprised

over one-fifth of the present State of Colorado, was the western

part of the Kansas Territory. From then (1858) until April of

1903, the County changed shape and size many times and on two

occasions was non-existent. During the early days of expansion and

exploration, Arapahoe County was visited by many explorers and

trappers until gold was discovered at the mouth of Little Dry

Creek, after which intensive growth was experienced throughout

the region. The territory in and around Arapahoe County also be-

came known as one of the greatest cattle ranch areas in the west.

With the advent of the railroads, towns like Deer Trail became

the natural termination points for cattle drives originating in
Texas.

The information in this report does not imply any State action

to zone or regulate use of the flood plains. The District has

the authority to regulate flood plains, but to date has chosen

to leave flood plain regulation responsibility with local governments.

The report provides a suitable basis for the adoption of land

use controls to guide flood plain management, with consideration

for environmental attributes, and thereby prevent intensification

of flood losses.

Acknowledgements

All survey and topographic data for this study was collected

and compiled by Nelson, Haley, Patterson and Quirk of Greeley,

Colorado with a contract from the Urban Drainage & Flood Control

District.
