A pallet of 50 properly filled sandbags has a weight of <br />about 2,000 lbs. This load can be managed by most fork lift trucks <br />and the pallet can be transported to the site by pick-up trucks or <br />other vehicles. By palletizing loads, the time consuming and back- <br />breaking job of handling individual sandbags can be lessened. <br /> <br />To be effective, sandbags must be properly filled. The average <br />sandbag measures 14 x 25 inches and is filled approximately half- <br />full to allow for proper stacking and placement. A properly filled <br />sandbag should weigh about 40 lbs., and occupy a space of about <br />28 cubic feet when tamped into place. <br /> <br />Filling sandbags is a tedious and labor intensive project. A <br />sandbag filling station may be constructed to speed the process and <br />plans for one design can be found in the appendix.
