SHEET COMMENTARY
SHEET 14 OF 23
STATION 960+00 TO STATION 1064+00
REACH SEVEN

The underlying concept for the plan is to preserve and enhance the riparian
system to the extent possible, providing opportunities for people to
experience the river in its natural state.

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

IV-37

The Recreation Plan proposed for this segment of the South Platte River is
based on the engineering drawings in Vol. I of the Phase B Report. As the
engineering drawings are revised and refined, the plan proposed here will
need to be reevaluated and modified if necessary to accommodate flood
control measures.

The land use in this segment is primarily industrial with large parcels of
undeve loped 1 and. The typi ca 1 corri dor wi dth is 400 feet. No recreation
improvements currently exist in this segment.

The plan proposes construction of an east-bank trail system and two pocket
parks. Begi nni ng at the south end of the segment, the t rai 1 crosses the
Burlington Canal via a pedestrian bridge and continues north, crossing
underneath York Street with a ramp to street grade. The trail continues
north along the east bank, then crosses to the west bank via a pedestrian
bridge. The trail continues along the west bank through a proposed pOCket
park and underneath the metro-sewage district bridge with ramps to street
grade. A 1 andscape buffer is proposed between the tra i 1 and adj acent
development north of York Street to create a quality trail experience.

The plan includes development of the York Street Pocket Park with informal
picnic and rest areas in the land between the Burlington Canal and the
South Platte River. A pocket park is also proposed at 64th Avenue which
would provide parking, picnic tables, and adjacent boat landings.

The addition of a boat chute to each of the six dams is suggested in this
segment, as well as construction of two boat landings adjacent to each as
portage facilities.
