A linear park currently exists along the west bank,
complimented by Gates-Crescent Park, Fishback Landing Park, Confluence
Park, Rockmont Park and Riverfront Pak. The existing linear park consists
of a west-bank trail that continues north to 19th Street, crossing to the
east bank over the 19th Street Viaduct and continuing north.

The plan proposes improvements to several parks. Proposed improvements to
Confluence Park include rebuilding the Kayak Course with stairs for return
boater access and maintaining a three foot water cascade through the
channe 1 as part of upstream dam reconst ruct ion. Proposed improvements to
Rockmont Park include expansion of the park, addition of boat landings and
multipurpose play fields, and landscaping to improve park character. The
plan also proposes development of Riverfront Park on the east bank north of
20th by adding a boat landing and improving the existing parking lots.
Improvements to Gates-Crescent Park, home of the Denver Children's Museum,
include relocation of the maintenance warehouses, addition of a boat
landing, and development of a trail connection to Mile High Stadium.

The Recreation Plan proposed for this segment of the South Platte River is
based on the engineering drawings in Vol. I of the Phase B Report. As the
engi neeri ng drawi ngs are revi sed and refi ned, the pl an proposed here wi 11
need to be reevaluated and modified if necessary to accommodate flood
control measures.

The plan proposes construction of an opposite-bank trail system to
accommodate the anticipated heavy use through Denver as well as further
development of the existing parks. The proposed trail would begin on the
east bank cont i nui ng north to the exi st i ng pedestri an bri dge below Speer
Boulevard in Confluence Park. The proposed trail would continue along the
east bank, extending the existing trail north of Cherry Creek, including an
opposite-bank spur along the creek itself. On the west bank, the new trail
would tie to the existing trail at 19th Street and continue north to the
end of the segment with a spur trail to the Rockmont Neighborhood through
Rockmont Park. Two pedestrian bridges are proposed to connect the east and
west-bank trails: one in Gates-Crescent Park and the other below 20th
Street in Rockmont Park. A critical plan concept is to develop trail
connections to downtown, Auraria, and the proposed new developments in the
Centra 1 Pl atte Va 11 ey. Because the nature of the developments in the
Central Platte Valley is unknown, the exact location and alignment of these
connect ions cannot be determi ned at thi s time. The plan a 1 so proposes
development of open spaces and parks within the Central Platte Valley.
