SHEET COMMENTARY
SHEET 7 OF 23
STATION 1730+00 TO STATION 1805+00
REACHES TWO ANO THREE

To increase boating safety and access, several improvements to the river
are proposed. The plan proposes adding a boat chute or white water bypass
to the Union Dam. Two other dams in this segment have boat chutes, but
construction of boat landings are proposed for each and for Union Dam to
allow portage around the dams.

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

IV-23

The Recreation Plan proposed for this segment of the South Platte River is
based on the engineering drawings in Vol. I of the Phase B Report. As the
engineering drawings are revised and refined, the plan proposed here will
need to be reeva I uated and modifi ed if necessa ry to accommodate flood
control measures.

The land uses along the river in this segment include various industrial
activities and a portion of the Englewood Golf Course north of Oxford. The
study corridor is typically 400 feet wide in this segment.

The plan proposes development of a linear park complimented by a small rest
area and scenic overlook approximately 700 feet north of Union Avenue. The
plan calls for continuation of the major spine trail along the east bank
crossing underneath Union Avenue and West Oxford Avenue with a ramp to the
street at Union. As the trail crosses West Oxford, it enters the Englewood
Golf Course. Approximately 350 feet north of West Oxford, the trail
crosses to the east bank via an existing bridge within the golf course used
by golfers. At this point the trail joins an existing trail and continues
north.

The plan also proposes a west-bank spur trail from the golf cart bridge
north to the Englewood Wildlife Preserve. This trail would be for hiking
only.

The plan also proposes providing a parking lot for approximately 20 cars
accessible from West Oxford on the west bank. A nearby boat landing would
also improve boater access.
