SHEET COMMENTARY
SHEET 5 OF 23
STATION 1916+00 TO STATION 2014+00
REACHES ONE AND TWO

fall and rest area with benches and bike rack.

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

IV-19

The boating improvements proposed on this sheet are the addition of a boat
chute and two boat landings as portage facilities for the Columbine Dam.

The Recreation Plan proposed for this segment of the South Platte River is
based on the engineering drawings in Vol. I of the Phase B Report. As the
engi neeri ng drawi ngs are revi sed and refi ned, the pl an proposed here wi 11
need to be reevaluated and modified if necessary to accommodate flood
control measures.

The majority of the land on both banks in this segment is under development
as a Regional Park called South Platte Park (Littleton Floodplain Park).
The park extends north encompassing 75% of this sheet. The park provides
opportunities to preserve and enhance the natural systems of the South
Platte River. On the east bank of the park's southern end, a nature center
is planned to concentrate active uses and provide auto access. The plan
proposes development of the nature center to provide auto access from South
Santa Fe Drive and boater access to the river.

The plan proposes construction of the main spine trail on the east bank,
continuing the trail that began in the previous segment. The west-bank
trail joins the east bank trail via a pedestrian bridge located north of
Oad Cl ark Gul ch. The bri dge creates a pedest ri an connect i on between the
parking area off Highway C-470 and the nature center. A tributary trail
connection to the east is recommended at or near Dad Clark Gulch. If
construct i on of Ken Caryl Road at the southern port i on of the segment
proceeds as anticipated, the plan should provide for a landscape buffer to
protect the visual integrity of the park experience.

The proposed east-bank trail crossses the northern boundary of South Platte
Park several hundred feet south of the Columbine Dam, then crosses a small
pedestrian bridge over Lee Gulch. The plan also proposes a tributary trail
along Lee Gulch and construction of Lee Gulch Pocket Park where Lee Gulch
joins the river. Possible special features for the park include a water
