No boating improvements are recommended
for the two dams in the southern portion of this segment due to concerns
raised by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Thi s segment is the southernmost port i on of the study corri dor. The 1 and
on both ~~nks of the river is designated for regional recreation
facilities: Chatfield State Recreation Area and South Platte Park.
Chatfield State Recreation Area begins at the southern tip of the segment
and continues north to Highway C-470. Three existing picnic areas on the
east bank provide parking and auto access.

The plan proposes construction of an east-bank trail with trail heads at
each picnic area. The trail loops around several lakes and continues along
the east bank, crossing C-470 into South Platte Park. The trail also
provides access to boat landings.

South Platte Park (Littleton Floodplain Park) begins north of Highway
C-470, and is current ly under development as a Regi ona 1 Park for wil dl ife
observation, nature study, hiking and other passive uses. The plan
proposes continued development for these purposes. The plan also proposes
construction of a 30-car parking lot with a boat loading and unloading area
on the west bank with access from Highway C-470. A guardrail is proposed
for Highway C-470 to limit left turn movements from the parking lot. The
plan also proposes construction of a west-bank trail which begins at the
parking lot and joins the east-bank trail via a pedestrian bridge in the
next segment.
