Recreation Alternative:

Several pocket parks are proposed in this section, including those at
Franklin street, York Street, 64th Avenue and Highway 270 frontage road.
The trail runs on the east bank to a point just south of the Metro Sewer
Plant where it crosses on a new pedestrian bridge and continues on the west
bank to Sand Creek. The roads and open area of the Riverside Cemetary
could be incorporated into the trail corridor in this reach.

Seven river obstructions need to be improved with boat chutes and landings
for continuous passage and improved safety. An opportunity exists for a
Reserve Park for wildlife and passive recreation at the confluence with
Sand Creek where additional wetlands might also be created. Native
plantings of cottonwood, willow and dense ground cover should be
accomplished to enhance the wildlife habitat, together with selective rock
placement in the channel for improvement of the acquatic environment. The
tributary connection along Sand Creek to the Highline Canal, which serves
Aurora and other east-side metropolitan areas, should also be developed
before the opportunity is lost. A new pedestrian bridge will be required
to connect the Sand Creek trail to the Greenway trail.
